George Harrison will be remembered at a public birthday celebration on
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in front of:

Capitol Records Tower Building
1750 N. Vine Street
Hollywood, California

Fans of George Harrison are invited to bring flowers and birthday message cards to place around the star, and to participate in a birthday cake cutting ceremony to remember and honor the late legendary singer, songwriter and Beatles member.

Live and taped George Harrison and Beatles songs will be played at the event, and fans are invited to perform their own music, poetry and spoken word tributes. Radio host Chris Carter of Breakfast With the Beatles www.breakfastwiththebeatles.com/ on 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles will lead the children at the event in lighting the candles and cutting the specially decorated cake.

In addition, during the ceremony, a mock foam-board Walk of Fame Star for George that a Beatles fan has made will be placed next to John Lennon's star, in hope that an official star for George will be installed next to or near John's star sometime soon. John's star has been in front of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood since Sept. 28, 1988.

George Harrison was born February 25, 1943 in the Hunts Cross area of Liverpool and passed away on November 29, 2001 in Los Angeles after a long bout with cancer.

The late former Beatle George Harrison is getting his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced Friday that Harrison's star will be unveiled on April 14 in front of Hollywood's Capitol Records building.

The Beatles have a star, but the only two members of the band to have their own individual stars are John Lennon, and now, George Harrison. Lennon was shot to death in 1980 by a psychotic fan, and Harrison died of cancer in 2001. The band's two surviving members - Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr - don't have their own stars, and if the trend continues, they probably won't until they are deceased.

George Harrison's star will be the 2,382 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The kid brother she had known since he was eight hours old had grown up to become a world-famous Beatle.

But George Harrison’s big sister Louise today reveals the crucial part she played in the Fab Four’s big American break.

The late George will next week be honoured with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And nobody will be prouder than Louise, who had moved to the States with her mining engineer husband Gordon in 1963 just as Beatlemania was gripping Britain.

Leafing through never-before-seen photographs in an intimate family album, Louise, now 78, says: “Back in 1963 no one had heard of The Beatles in America. It was all Elvis and do-wop music.

“Their records were not being played on the radio by any stations, and without that exposure they would never sell any records.”

Louise wrote to the band’s manager Brian Epstein offering her help in plugging the records across the Atlantic.

Epstein replied: “I will really be more than grateful for anything you can do because we are really anxious indeed that the records will eventually ‘break’ in the States.”

“I was a timid housewife with two small kids, but I wanted to do all I could to help my kid brother,” she says.

A succession of US radio DJs refused to play their songs – but then Louise urged Epstein to get the band on the highly popular Ed Sullivan TV show.

The Beatles were getting huge and Epstein was inundated with calls asking them to perform but she says it was her Ed Sullivan tip-off which helped persuade the manager.





“Brian said he hardly took any of the calls asking The Beatles to perform, but because I had told him about Ed Sullivan he decided to take his call,” she says. “And I’m sure he was glad that he did!”

A record 72 million people watched the show – and Beatlemania took off across the US. As she thumbs through hundreds of snaps of her family and The Beatles, she recalls that historic first visit to New York in November 1963. “As we got in the car there were girls everywhere and they were climbing on the top of the limo, waving at us and screaming,” she smiles.

“We drove down the street very slowly so they would not fall off, but there were handbags and shoes flying all over.

“It looked as if a hurricane had gone through the place.”





George died in 2001 aged 58 from lung cancer after a four-year fight against the disease.

His widow Olivia and son Dhani are expected to be at the Walk of Fame ceremony on Tuesday.

The Beatles have a shared star on the fabled Walk, but only George and John Lennon, shot dead in 1980, have been individually honoured. Louise, who after almost 50 years in America still retains her British accent, remembers her little brother with huge fondness. “George was a smashing kid, always happy and smiling,” she says. “I knew him from when he was eight hours old.

“He was a great brother and I have so many happy memories of him.

“He had very simple tastes, and was not flashy or showy. I think as people got to know The Beatles they realised that.

“He loved being a Beatle but I think, like the others, he would have swapped all the fame that came with it for just being a good musician.”

Louise now manages a Beatles’ tribute band called the Liverpool Legends – and during the interval she answers questions from the audience about Beatles trivia and later signs autographs.

However, George did not speak to her for six years after she opened a bed and breakfast called A Hard Day’s Night in her home of Benton, Illinois.

Two weeks before he died, George relented and they healed the rift as he lay in a New York hospital.

“I like to think that George would approve of what I am doing now,” says Louise. “I was part of that Beatle family, and it is gratifying to know that such a positive message is still being put out.

“George was always so proud of his music with The Beatles and I am sure he is looking down from heaven smiling and seeing what his ‘big sis Lou’ is doing.”

HOLLYWOOD — Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison posthumously received the 2,382nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Tuesday in front of the Capitol Records building, the same day the label announced plans for a new Harrison music release.

Harrison’s widow, Olivia, and his son, Dhani, accepted the star during the late-morning ceremony, which was attended by about 1,000 people, some of whom arrived at about 5 a.m.

Harrison, the most self-effacing member of rock ‘n’ roll’s most celebrated band, was born in Liverpool, England, on Feb. 25, 1943, the son of a bus driver.

He attended the Liverpool Institute for Boys, where he was a classmate of Paul McCartney. The two joined John Lennon in the Quarrymen in 1958. Over the next two years, the band would go through several changes before drummer Ringo Starr joined, and the group debuted as the Beatles on Feb. 21, 1961.

Harrison, sometimes called the “quiet Beatle,’’ was primarily a guitarist, his compositional contribution mostly overshadowed by the songwriting of McCartney and Lennon.

The group’s early years, though successful, were not Harrison’s most artful or productive. It wasn’t until 1966 that Harrison really began writing the first of his critical and commercial hits for the group, including Taxman and Love You Too.

From 1968-70, he wrote some of the foursome’s most-heartfelt tunes, including While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes the Sun.

Another one of Harrison’s song, Something, was once hailed by the late Frank Sinatra — no fan of rock bands — as the greatest love song ever written.

In the years immediately following The Beatles’ 1970 breakup, Harrison pursued his interest in the creation and restoration of gardens, rare books and car racing. In 1971, he organized one of the first of rock ‘n’ roll’s all-star benefit events, The Concert for Bangladesh.


Harrison took a five-year break from recording in the 1980s, then returned in 1987 with the album Cloud Nine, which reached the top 10 in both the United States and United Kingdom.

In 1988, he joined up with Bob Dylan, Tim Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison to form the Travelling Wilburys, which enjoyed great praise from record buyers and music critics alike.

Harrison’s post-Beatles career also included producing 23 movies under the HandMade Films banner, including Time Bandits, Mona Lisa, Shanghai Surprise, and Withnail and I.

Harrison died Nov. 29, 2001, in Los Angeles from cancer at the age of 58.

In conjunction with the ceremony, Capitol Records announced it will release a collection June 16 titled Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison, a collection of digitally remastered recordings of Harrison’s solo recordings, along with three live recordings of the Harrison-penned Beatles tracks Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Here Comes the Sun.

Former Beatle George Harrison has been honoured with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.

Sir Paul McCartney attended the unveiling outside the landmark Capitol Records building, joining Harrison's widow Olivia and son Dhani.

Olivia paid tribute to her late husband, describing him as "a beautiful, mystical man living in a material world".

Harrison, the youngest of the Beatles, died of lung cancer in 2001 aged 58.

Other stars including Monty Python actor Eric Idle, Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and musician Tom Petty attended the ceremony.

Idle described the Beatle as a "remarkable person" with a "wonderful sense of humour".


Live Forever

Hanks also addressed the hundreds of fans that turned up for the event.

He said: "George Harrison held the future in the guitar in his hands and it had six strings. Let us thank Leo Fender, who brought electricity to music.

"Let us thank them all for bringing us George. Every record was an event, every cut was an opera, the entire story told ours. All things must pass, sure. But George is going to live forever."

Harrison is the second Beatle to be honoured individually on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He already shares a star with the rest of the group, but only he and John Lennon - who was also posthumously awarded a star in 1988 - have their own.

Sir Paul has been approved for a star, but no date has been fixed yet for a ceremony.
