How wonderful our satellite imagery has become these past few years. Brian himself would be astounded ~ it's beyond belief that technology could ever advance this far.

I suspect that's aerial rather than satellite photography, but in any case it's wonderful to have access to the pictures!

Thank you for sharing your photos here with us of your visit to Brian Epstein's grave site. You provided a very "close up" photo of his tombstone where the words are more easily readable. It is not often that one has the opportunity to touch his tombstone. Your photos and visit is something you will treasure the rest of your life; to be THAT CLOSE to Brian Epstein. May I also add that you are photogenic.

The place is quite abandoned and I didnt like where he is.He should, at least , be by his mother. And as you say those pictures are something I will treasure for sure! It was the most special moment I had in Liverpool

Firstly, I am delighted to have you join us on the forum, Martha. I'm so sorry I haven't been around as much as I should be. Not the best excuse, but Life Happens, I guess. Martha saidI think I read somewhere that the rabbi felt it necessary to bury him in "unconsecrated ground" because of the strong opinion that he was a suicide. Oy, the shanda! To paraphrase a past forum post: When a flister of mine (flister=one who is an online friend, or on a LiveJournal Friends List), Katie, attended a service at the (now-closed) Epstein family's Greenbank Synagogue, she had a talk afterward with the officiating rabbi. She asked him why there was NO indication within the building that Brian and his family had attended this place every week. No trace whatsoever of a man who later became so very well-known worldwide. The rabbi explained that there was never a plaque or anything for Brian within the building because he (and apparently all the past clergy there) believe Brian committed suicide. Errmmm? That's a rumour, rabbi. Are you saying the official findings are lies? Who are you to perpetuate your belief in this rumour, informally making it the last word on the subject within your synagogue, inconsistent with the coroner's official finding? Who are you, indeed? This "unconsecrated ground" thing that I'm sure I've read somewhere, may or may not be true. Would not surprise me a bit, though. Apparently Queenie and Harry are quite a bit further toward the front of the cemetery, nearer the chapel and clear across its main drive.

Thank you so much for posting this EppyLover! I was sooooooo excited being "by Brian" that I forgot to look for his parents. Besides I wasn't alone and there where people waiting for me in the car. Bummer! I wish I had seen them too! I didn't know about the rabbi who thought so! I'm very outraged ! He had no right to choose! It can't be demostrated ! Attachments:

Hello Martha! I just joined and saw your request for translation of the gravestones - here it is:
+ on either side of the Star of David at top, are the letters (read right to left) representing the sounds of "P" and "N". They stand for the words, "Po Nikbar", which means, "Here is buried", or "Here lies..."
+ the first line of Hebrew reads, "Reb Shmuel ben Reb Zvi (The word "Reb" is an honorific, maybe something between "Mr." and "The Honorable" - it does not mean "rabbi"). So the line simply means, Shmuel (Samuel) the son of Zvi. These are the Hebrew names of Brian and his father Harry.
+ the second line reads, "Niftar (Died [on the] Kaf-Alef [21st] [of the month of'] Av [in the year] Tet-Shin-Kaf-Zayin [5727]. The 21st day of the Hebrew month of Av, 5727, corresponds to Aug 27, 1967. Hebrew uses letters to stand for numbers, so the Kaf-Alef and Tet-Shin-Kaf-Zayin are the numers for the day of the month and the year, respectively. Actually, Tet-Shin-Kaf-Zayin really signifies 727, the 5000 is understood. This is an example of the pending "Y6K" crisis that will affect Jewish tombstones 229 years from now! ;-) ;-)
at the base of the tombstone is a common Hebrew inscription, the letters Tav-Nun-Zadi-Bet-Hey, which is an abbreviation of a verse from the Bible, the first book of Samuel, 25:29, "May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life".
It all doesn't sound very exciting, but this is how Jewish tombstones are traditionally inscribed with Hebrew. When my own father (of blessed memory) passed away, this is exactly how I had his tombstone inscribed with Hebrew.
Best regards! SteveR
