John Lennon LENNON TRIBUTE CONCERT PLANNED IN NEW YORK CITY virginmedia.com Friday, November 14, 2008 A free tribute gig to John Lennon will take place in New York's Central Park next month. "For The Love Of Lennon," organised by New Arts NYC, will commemorate the life of the music legend on December 7, the eve of the 28th anniversary of his tragic assassination. The two-hour-long concert at the Central Park Bandshell will be led by professional musicians, encouraging fans to sing along to their favourite Beatles songs and pay homage to the icon. "It's about doing something out of love for this city, and in honour of a profound artist and New Yorker who continues to touch the hearts, minds and ears of millions," says the concert's producer Michael Dustin Youree. "It's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait. Perhaps Lennon himself said it best, "Come together right now, over me." For years, devoted fans have gathered annually in the park to celebrate John's life and music, near the Dakota, where the singer lived with wife Yoko Ono and the location of his assassination by Mark David Chapman on December 8 1980. LENNON SHOT DEAD 28 YEARS AGO gothamist.com Jen Carlson Decenber 6, 2008 This coming week, throngs of John Lennon fans will come together once again to celebrate his life and remember the day that he was murdered outside of his home at the Dakota. The Beatle was shot on the night of December 8th (28 years ago this Monday) by Mark David Chapman (who was just denied parole again). Shortly after, he was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital, and was later cremated in Hartsdale, New York. Today, those who loved and admired him continue to commemorate his life. In New York, the tributes take place this Sunday. While many are impromptu gatherings, the Lennon Tribute will go on as planned, and there will also be a concert called For the Love of Lennon presented by the New Arts NYC. Simply show up to the Central Park Bandshell at 1 p.m. to take part in the latter; the organizers say “It’s about doing something out of love for this city, and in honor of a profound artist and New Yorker who continues to touch the hearts, minds and ears of millions." Earlier this year two movies hit theaters that documented the actions that led up to Lennon's murder; one called simply The Killing of John Lennon, and the other one starring Jared Leto. In other '08 Lennon news: not that anyone was waiting, but the church just forgave Lennon for that whole bigger than Jesus comment. Meanwhile, someone who Yoko Ono allegedly reconciled with, Lennon's "lost weekend" fling May Pang, released photos of their time together. FANS TO MARK ANNIVERSARY OF JOHN LENNON'S DEATH AT STRAWBERRY FIELDS IN CENTRAL PARK BY LAUREN JOHNSTON DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Monday, December 8th 2008, 3:05 PM It was 28 years ago today that singer/songwriter John Lennon was fatally shot outside his Upper West Side apartment building by a deranged fan. Every year since the tragic event on Dec. 8, 1980, fans have gathered to pay tribute to the gifted musician near the site of the shooting. Despite the bitter temperatures, hundreds of people are expected to gather later today at Strawberry Fields - the memorial garden in Central Park that was created as a tribute to the ex-Beatle in 1985. It is located across from the Dakota, where Lennon lived with Yoko Ono when he was killed. “We tend to treat today like everyday at Strawberry Fields, which is a place to honor [Lennon’s] message of love and peace,” said a spokesperson for the Central Park Conservancy. But not the fans. Though there is no official ceremony, they simply come in great numbers each year to lay flowers, light candles, and remember.
