Which band, current or historical, deserves the title "next Beatles"?
This topic has been on my mind, so I thought this would be a nice place to post the question.
For me this topic is quite difficult because...well, it's the Beatles! The Beatles can be associated with almost every genre of music, every style of music, and there music has proven to be timeless. They introduced new instruments into the realm of rock n roll, and so many other amazing ideas that are still being used today. It's one of the most difficult conclusions to come up with, who really is or will be the "next Beatles".
So after plenty of thought i have concluded that I need to crown several bands all at once for this award. None of these bands alone, in my opnion can be called the "next Beatles", however all together, it's pretty close:
First would be without a doubt, Led Zeppelin. Many people have argued which band is better, the Beatles or Led Zeppelin?! Another great topic for discussion, but there's not enough room on this page to get into that just yet.
Next, I'd have to go with one of my favorite bands of all time, The Eagles. The harmonies, the guitar solos, the perfect instrumentations. Can you possibly get any better or tighter as a band? Well, maybe if you were the Beatles?!
Third, I will choose a band SOLELY FOR STATISTICAL PURPOSES (I'm prepared to be harrased for this one)... The Spice Girls! Wow, I dont believe I just typed that. However, after doing a little bit of research, I realized that they have had 9 #1 Singles, six of them being consecutive. There are not many other female acts out there that can say this.
And last I will choose another great rock band that I think exemplifies several qualities similar to the beatles: U2. This band has been releasing chart-topping records for over 25 years. A quality that not many bands can say about themselves. They are also one of the best live bands on the planet and have had tons of chart-topping singles spanning several genres.
That's it, my "next Beatles" list. Let me know what you think! I want to know what other people's next Beatles band(s) are!

I see what you're saying about the chart-topping success of the Spice Girls, but I wouldn't call anything they've done musically as groundbreaking, influential (in a way other than 12 year old dressing up like them), timeless or... do you need me to finish this list? I think if you're going to truly label a band "the next Beatles" you need to consider a lot more than the number of hits they had. In 40 years do you really think a vast number of musicians will be talking about the major impact the Spice Girls had on their music? Plus, the Spice Girls really didn't stick around for that long. The Beatles were/are far more than a fad...

Thats why I have to combine all of my choices as one answer. I absolutely would never consider the Spice Girls alone as the "next Beatles", let alone any of the bands on my list. However, as a collection, they could almost be considered as influential and popular as the Beatles.

Well...I personal belive it would have been The Iveys/Badfinger they had Apples backing and 2 of The Beatles were on the recordings or help them.... Paul McCartney - Come and Get It also there talk of Paul playing bass on some tracks...... John Lennon - Tom and Peter were on the Imagine Lp and wanted to call them Prick but they desiced on Badfinger. Gegore Harrsion - Gave Peter one of his gutairs and help produce one of the LPs but had to leave....played sild on Day After Day.... Ringo Starr - Peter played on one of Ringo song can t remeber right now.
So thats all for 4 Beatles and 2 helping them...+ The Beatles old recording crew produced Badfinger recordings to old Gegore Martin did the music for Name of Name of Game thought sadly was unheard till the CD of that album was reissued.....
here s some intresting info:
As The Iveys:
MAYBE TOMORROW recorded July 23, 1968-April ?, 1969 at Trident, Olympic and Morgan Studios, London produced by Tony Visconti and Mal Evans
MAGIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC recorded April 1-October 1, 1969 (new recordings only) at Trident, Abbey Road and IBC Studios, London produced by Mal Evans and Paul McCartney
This Albums the most intreting: Come And Get It produced by Paul McCartney Crimson Ship produced by The Iveys Dear Angie produced by Tony Visconti Fisherman [version 2] produced by Mal Evans Midnight Sun produced by Mal Evans Beautiful And Blue [version 2] produced by Mal Evans Rock Of All Ages produced by Paul McCartney Carry On Till Tomorrow produced by Paul McCartney I'm In Love [version 2] produced by Mal Evans Walk Out In The Rain produced by Mal Evans Angelique [version 2] produced by Tony Visconti Knocking Down Our Home produced by Mal Evans Give It A Try produced by Mal Evans Maybe Tomorrow produced by Tony Visconti
Bonus Tracks (CD only): Storm In A Teacup produced by Mal Evans Arthur produced by Mal Evans
As Badfinger:
NO DICE recorded: April 24-August 24, 1970 at Abbey Road Studios & Trident Studios, London produced by: Mal Evans & Geoff Emerick
STRAIGHT UP [unreleased version] recorded: January 9-March 2, 1971 at Abbey Road Studios, Command Studios, and AIR Studios, London produced by: Geoff Emerick
STRAIGHT UP recorded February-October 29, 1971 at Abbey Road Studios, Trident Studios, Morgan Studios, Command Studios, and AIR Studios, London produced by: Geoff Emerick, George Harrison, and Todd Rundgren
ASS [unreleased version] September 9, 1972-February 14, 1973 Apple Studios, Morgan Studios, Trident Studios, Olympic Studios, and AIR Studios, London, and The Manor, Oxford Todd Rundgren and Badfinger
ASS October 22, 1972-May 11, 1973 Apple Studios, Morgan Studios, and Olympic Studios, London, and The Manor, Oxford Todd Rundgren, Badfinger and Chris Thomas
After leaving Apple on WB lable:
BADFINGER (FOR LOVE OR MONEY) June 19-November 22, 1973 Olympic Studios, London Badfinger and Chris Thomas
WISH YOU WERE HERE April 7-July 27, 1974 Caribou Ranch Studios, Colorado, U.S.A. and AIR Studios, London Chris Thomas
As you can see Geoff Emerick (Revlover to Abbey Road), Chris Thomas (Beatles- White Album) also Richard Lush was on STRAIGHT UP as a engineer.
So in my mind Badfinger WOULD have been the next Beatles if they had it all but with bad managment in the USA by Mr. Stan Polly they were riped off and with in a few years 2 of the main writes and singers killed themselfs...sad end to a band the could have been....

Your posts brought this to mind ~ From page 330 of Ray Coleman's The Man Who Made The Beatles: Brian had been offered representation of the Bee Gees early in 1967, but he felt too beleaguered by problems to concentrate on launching the group that would eventually score resounding successes as singers and songwriters. The Bee Gees were passed on to Stigwood, who saw their potential and, to the intense annoyance of Epstein, said of them: "They'll be bigger than the Beatles."
From page 331: Brian always admired artists other than those he managed or discovered, particularly Cream and Georgie Fame. But he resented Stigwood's hustle with the Bee Gees. "He liked their music, and liked them personally," says (Nat) Weiss, "but when Robert described them as the next Beatles, Brian was furious." Amusingly enough, when his statements started getting talked about, Stigwood did a virtual semi- flip-flop ~ ~ see "WHO SAID THE BEE GEES WERE THE NEW BEATLES?"_____________ I appreciate your thoughts, guys, but it's my humble yet sincere conviction that there is no such thing as a "next Beatles." Brian's Boys were a one-off: a happening that occurred only once and could never be repeated. I was a teenager during the 60's, and since then have never, ever seen any musical group or entertainment of any sort change the way people react to any person, place, object, event, or concept - or indeed alter the very culture of the entire world. They were an evolution and a revolution. All other groups mentioned here have merely been following suit. Anyway, why must we always compare? Especially when you're innocently doing what would amount to being a disservice by making comparison to such an incomparable entity. Okay, I understand why it's such a compulsion to compare - it's merely human nature. When it comes to The Beatles, though, I'm afraid you are cursing rather than helping whatever group you're labeling as such. Please see Doomed by the tag 'the next Beatles' If Badfinger hadn't been forced to live up to that hype, perhaps they would have been much more successful. They certainly had the talent and pizzazz... However, in keeping with the nature of The Fifth Beatle Movie Forum: Nobody outside of Liverpool would ever have heard of the Beatles, and none of us would have heard of any of the groups you mentioned, if it hadn't been for our Brian. This is the truth: - The Swingin' 60's didn't start until Brian made it happen. - The Swingin' 60's were effectively over when Brian died. Brian Epstein WAS The Alpha and Omega of The Swingin' 60's.

The way I see it, NOBODY can replace The Beatles. Nor could any group come close to it. There is no Next Beatles now or ever. There has been no band or group that were phenomenal as The Beatles and brought major interest/changes to the sound of music. Without the hard work of Brian Epstein in bringing The Beatles music to the world, there would not have been a British wave of other artists brought to the public. The Beatles set the stage and began everything for many artists and groups in music. They opened doors for musicians to emerge. Many people really started appreciating music much more because of listening to the music of The Beatles. There has been no group to have created so much interest in music before or after them. Nor was any group ever a phenomenon as The Beatles. All other groups afterwards owe their success to The Beatles. They awakened the world to music. Some groups were imitations of The Beatles. The Beatles were a "once-in-a-lifetime" occurrence/phenomenon. Never to be repeated again. We are fortunate to be alive at this time to witness The Beatles. It is a musical history that we have been blessed to experience.

[/size There will NEVER be another Beatles. The Beatles began a generation of music. Their legacy will be forever etched into the history of Rock N Roll. In only 8 years they crossed so many thresholds that one can't even put the term "New Beatles" into words.

I am gonna cast my vote with the fab five from the northern ghettos, yes The Spice Girls are obviously the next Beatles (thanks for the brave post) - the power of five - the ability to pare it down to four when the kinda nutty one went off on her own - the intelligence to welcome her back with open arms - the brilliant harmonies - the distinct personalities - conquering America TWICE! - and I swear to god, if you and I aren't talking about "2 become 1" in forty years........ They were put on this earth to show us how to have a good time and, to quote the 2008 concert finale, "Mission Accomplished."
