BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- There have been rumors for a couple of years that George Martin, legendary producer of the Beatles, would be a mentor on Fox's "American Idol.'' The rumors were shot down by Martin, sometimes called "the fifth Beatle,'' at a PBS press conference for On Record: The Soundtrack of Our Lives.

"I know it's enormously popular,'' Martin said of America's most-watched program. "But it's not my cup of tea. I would never dream of being on there.''

Actor Kevin Spacey will
narrate On Record

Martin will be the host for On Record,' an eight-hour series slated to air in fall 2010. Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey will narrate the history of recorded music. Asked to name a favorite Beatles song, Martin selected In My Life.

"Well, we did like each other, for a start,'' Martin said of the Fab Four. "We worked as a team. Working with the Beatles obviously was a large part of my life, but not the entire part of my life. And they're not the dominant theme of this series. Music and records is the most dominant theme.''
